Human Powered Health began 2022 carrying a mission to empower people of all ages, cultures, abilities and backgrounds to embrace healthier lifestyles with the team continuing where they left off in 2021 and dominating breakaways. 

Immediately bringing the vision and new style of the team, Ben King won the polka dot jersey at the Volta a Valenciana before Arvid de Kleijn scored a podium on the final day of the Tour of Antalya and Stephen Bassett dug in for a double podium at Ruta del Sol. The high point of the early season came when Pier-André Coté gave us a taste of things to come by winning the Grand Prix Criquielion.

Both Coté and de Kleijn continued their form through the spring as the pair sprinted to podium places at the Presidential Tour of Turkey and Giro di Sicilia on the same day. Joey Rosskopf kept the good times coming on the Mediterranean Sea, finishing second on a stage of the International Tour of Hellas only eleven weeks after breaking his left elbow. 

It’s not spring without a little mud so while half the squad were soaking up the sun, the other half navigated the semi-classics of Northern Europe, chief amongst them the wet, windy and wild Tro-Bro Léon. No pig prize this year though.

Dutch powerhouse de Kleijn rejoined the guys in Europe for the 4 Days of Dunkirk where on the opening day he expertly dodged a crash in the finale to win the stage and take the fetching pink jersey.

Stage race season well and truly kicked off in May with the team heading to the hot flatlands of the Tour de Hongrie before taking on the snow-capped peaks of the Tour of Norway. The sunset train was also at full speed at the ZLM Tour thanks to new signing Matt Gibson delivering de Kleijn to a heap of top fives.

A big summer of action followed with the team racing at WorldTour level at the Tour de Suisse. A traditional curtain raiser before the Tour de France, the riders would have to dig deep and climb high as they went wheel to wheel with the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Geraint Thomas. 

Then it was back to the United States and Canada for the national championships, where – we don’t know if you heard – Human Powered Health did quite well. In one of the most phenomenal four-hour periods in the program’s 16-year history, Kyle Murphy used incredible teamwork as a springboard for victory in Knoxville before Pier-André Coté scored the maple leaf jersey in Edmonton on an emotional day. The pair both spoke afterwards about how their families propelled them to victory.

Late summer saw the team take on an ambitious program navigating Europe. De Kleijn kept the top tens rolling in at the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon, Tour of Denmark and the Sazka Tour with Paul Double opening his account with a day in the KOM jersey at the Czech race. 

The high point of the block then came with Bassett taking victory in the Arctic Race of Norway KOM classification. A result that rewarded the American’s breakaway artistry, he climbed the final podium in Trondheim just weeks after getting T-boned by a deer on a training ride.

It was always going to be difficult to replicate the highs of 2021 at the Volta a Portugal and Tour of Britain but there was no lack of trying. Kyle Murphy, resplendent in his new Stars and Stripes jersey and Robin Carpenter, animated many a breakaway in Portugal and Bassett continued his climbing form in Britain when he and Gibson dominated the breakaway on stage 1.

There’s nothing quite like a home race, and with the start just outside Baltimore at the Kelly Benefits Strategies headquarters, the Maryland Cycling Classic p/b UnitedHealthcare was certainly that. With UCI Pro Series racing returning to home streets, Human Powered Health put on a show displaying both North American champions jerseys, a fleet of beautiful Acura team cars and of course Nickolas Zukowsky racing WorldTour opposition to second place and the combativity jersey.

As the 2022 season wound down for another year, the team returned to a semi-classic racing block in France and Belgium with Gage Hecht ending the year on a high by winning the Famenne Ardenne Classic’s KOM prize.
