Dutch ex-pro signs on from the continental team Beat Cycling

Human Powered Health is excited to announce that as of November 1, Luuc Bugter will join the program from the continental team Beat Cycling as a sports director.

The Dutchman will join the team as of November 1 and will be responsible for liaising between rider’s trainers and directing staff, focussing on the performance plans of each rider. This is a crucial role in the squad as Bugter will be supervising the mental, physical and nutritional health of the athletes.

“It’s really important from the beginning of the season to have clear goals, both as a team and personally,” Bugter says of his new role. “For me it’s a big opportunity to do this with Human Powered Health, to contribute towards the rider’s performances and to set goals because that’s really important to motivate the athletes so everyone knows what they have to do and especially in the races to have clear roles.”

A sprinter in his day, Bugter competed from 2015 – 2021, during which time he won the Tour d’Eure-et-Loir, the Irish Rás Tailteann race and the one day PWZ Zuidenveld Tour. He also road as a stagiaire on Vérandas Willems-Crelan team alongside the likes of Wout van Aert, Stijn Devolder and Tim Merlier.

At 29 years old, Bugter is relatively young compared to many team directors but the Dutchman had the foresight to plan his career after racing and make the most of his earlier studies in Sport, Health and Management.

“I knew there would be another life after cycling for me, I wanted to develop and challenge myself,” he explains of his decision to move from cyclist to director on Beat Cycling at the start of the year. “It was a good step for me and it suits me really well.”

Unique because of his age, Bugter is keen to use his recent experience in racing and directing in UCI 1.1 race to help the team grow in Europe, as well as learn from the acquired knowledge of the team’s other directors at UCI ProTour level.

I knew there would be another life after cycling for me.

“This year was a year I had to come out of my comfort zone but that is a way that you grow in the role. I can learn a lot from the sports directors here at the moment, so that makes my decision easier to join Human Powered Health.”

Human Powered Health is delighted to welcome Luuc to the team. Look out for more from the new director next week with the return of the ‘Things with’ series.
