Riding through history at La Doyenne

Known as “La Doyenne” — the Old Lady — Liège–Bastogne–Liège is a race that demands everything. From the leg-breaking gradients of La Redoute to the shadowy, relentless forests of Wallonia, every kilometre tests the limits. It is a race of attrition and instinct, where fatigue and courage collide to produce a finale that is as brutal as it is beautiful. It was no different in 2026, with 2,600 metres of elevation gain over the 156 km parcours to contend with.

Bastogne, the race’s southern turning point, carries a weight far beyond cycling. Once a focal point of conflict in the 20th century, its landscape still bears the memory of war. Today, those echoes sit alongside tributes to the sport’s most storied Classic, where it’s just as easy to picture riders battling and suffering as it is to imagine the past that shaped these roads.
