Alice Wood sprinted to her first podium for Human Powered Health Cycling by finishing second in the Kreiz Breizh Elites Fémnin.
The 29-year-old scored the silver, in this, her final year as a professional cyclist, by winning the peloton bunch kick behind solo winner Annouska Koster (Uno-X Mobility) at the end of the 137.8 km race from Callac to Pontrieux.
“I’m really happy to get on the podium,” she said. “It’s been a long time so it’s nice to get what could be my last podium.”
Wood teed up her sprint at the end of a frenetic eight laps around Pontrieux.
“It wasn’t the plan for me to sprint so I had to adapt,” she explained. “I had to be confident in myself which is something I struggle with. I was on my own in the final and managed to make sure I was in a good position to be able to sprint. I started early to ensure I had the best chance and was surprised when no one came around me.”
Human Powered Health was present at the head of racing throughout, with Henrietta Christie also infiltrating one of the strongest moves on the circuit.
“It was a tough race with a lot of attacks and climbs which the girls controlled well,” Wood said.
The Brit’s next race will be Konvert Koerse in Belgium but before that she will travel to watch her husband at Paris 2024, competing for Great Britain in the men’s team pursuit.
“I have a few weeks until my next race now so have the chance to go and watch Ollie next week which I’m really excited about.”
